Further hunting in the links (Kelly's, I think it was) you supplied suggested the use of the enhanced detail tab in Dev Mgr, which I found gave exhaustive details on what was available, enough to suggest that the 'Unknown device' was looking for a hardware id of _NVRAIDBUS, or variant thereof.

My SBPCI128 keeps getting installed as a "unknown device". I have downloaded the updated driver from Creative, but after a reboot, I get the same "unknown installation". The hardware is identified as unknown on the message window. When I go to Device Manager nothing shows as being a problem.
