Further hunting in the links (Kelly's, I think it was) you supplied suggested the use of the enhanced detail tab in Dev Mgr, which I found gave exhaustive details on what was available, enough to suggest that the 'Unknown device' was looking for a hardware id of _NVRAIDBUS, or variant thereof.

SBPCI128 keeps getting installed as a "unknown device". I have downloaded the updated driver from Creative, but after a reboot, I get the same "unknown installation". I did read the "How to Use Registry Editor to Identify an Unknown PCI Device", but I have no "Unknowns" in the PCI registry they discuss. I then tried SystemInfo (MSInfo32.exe) to get the following... but it's beyond me as to what this device is. It looks like a Windows "system" type device. Unknown Device.

The hardware is identified as unknown on the message window. When I go to Device Manager nothing shows as being a problem. There is no unknown device folder, nor can I find any devices which are identified as being a problem. If I choose to click on "Ask me again later", I actually need to click on it 7 times
