I've checked them out, and the only ones that really apply are Q298837 (How to Use Registry Editor to Identify an Unknown PCI Device - Unknown Device) and Q125174 (Explanation of Error codes Generated by Device Manager). When I boot/reboot my computer, the Plug n Play function finds 3 Unknown Devices.

Restart PnP find 'Unknown Device'
Now, the application software can't find it, and it no longer shows up in the Device Manager (no Imaging Devices at all). I do now have an "Unknown Device" listed in the USB device tree. If you have true duplicates, Remove ALL instances of that device. Do not remove the video adapter. Places where you can expect to possibly find duplicates and should probably leave them are System section and USB section. Reboot and let Windows Reinstall. installed a win 98 driver for my 2000 machine and now I have an unknown device. I know that this "virtual" device is being created by the software that came with that 98 driver.
