Under the device manager, there's one hardware not installed. It says 'Unknown Device'. Device type: Other devices Manufacturer: Unknown Location: on PCI standard ISA bridge Any clue by the above information what the 'Unknown device' would be? Thanks.

Unknown Device
Right click on the 'Unknown Device' and choose Properties. Choose the Details tab. Copy the Device Instance ID and see if you can search the web for clarification. If you post back here someone here may recognize the entry. A lot of these unknown devices turn out to be ACPI devices that when installed are placed under System Devices in Device Manager.

I beleive that is the game port on a Creative audio card.

Then below where the soundcard is, the game port one is there and is disabled and not working properly according to the device manager. "Colin Barnhorst" wrote in message

I have a fixed a few of the Unknown Devices by clicking on Update Driver and manually navigating to the location where Vista puts all our install setup files. Note, you may have to uncheck the box for "Hide protected system files" in folder view options.
The driver install file are located at something like: C:\Users\"User Name"\AppData\Local\Temp\{17E362.....}
Dig down into the various {folder} name levels to find a file name familiar to you. For instance I had trouble with my M-Audio Revolution 5.1 sound card. I located a subfolder with many files with the revo prefix. Once pointed to that location to "look" for the driver to update Vista found the correct driver and the unknown driver entry disappeared.
vista wants to install driver for an unknown device but can't find them is there a way that i can tell what this device is it dosn't say anywhere?
Try using your devices. If one doesn't work...that's the one! Paula

Hi I just installed Vista last nite and all went very well with the exception of one"unknown device" Vista tries to search for a driver for this device and of course cannot find one.I have no idea what this device is...how do I determine this??
Installed fine on an Asrock 939Sata2(ULI chipset) mobo with 4x516 of DDR3200,6600GT video,2 ethernet cards,2 HD,DVD burner,........all drivers were automatically installed.I just needed to update the video and sound drivers. Made the mistake of loading Jave 5 and screwed up IE7......used the restore feature and all was back to normal. Where would I find Java 6....did a search nothing came up
thanks for the help peter

I selected the feature on the sun Java web site to allow the (Online Installation) of JRE 5 update 7 to my Vista system and have not encountered any problems.
If you download the Offline package, there appears to be a problem trying to install that. It may be a security situation in Vista, or it may be an incompatibility of the installer with Vista.

It may not be possible to determine the unknown device this early in development. You could submit a bug report through the Beta Client via the feedback link. I have an unknown device and I have just disabled it for now in Device Manager and as new drivers come out I'll see if that gets resolved. I think it's my integrated dialup modem on the motherboard anyway, (which is disabled in bios as it conflicted with my NIC in previous windows) as I have exhausted the issue of trying to get that hardware installed. There is also software out there that can identify some devices that Windows can't.
